Renovation Project – Part 3

Last week I told you all about my hacking off skills in the front bedroom and the bathroom. Having done as much as I could for now in those 2 rooms, I moved onto the back bedroom. Those fitted wardrobes all needed to come out!

Armed with my electric screwdriver I got to work. I’ve gotta say it was harder than I expected, especially those high up screws. So many screws!

Eventually all the fitted wardrobes were out and where the one had been in the corner by the window, I noticed the plaster board was coming away from the wall. So of course I then pulled off all the plaster board! There was some ancient wallpaper that was so thin it just disintegrated when touched and I found an old woodworkers monthly journal dated June 1962 behind the wall. More hacking off to do another day.

I actually thought the back wall in this room was ok but after I removed the curtain rail the wall was just crumbly, so yet another wall to hack off.

Enough of upstairs for the time being. Downstairs we have had the help of my Dad and Frank to take out the kitchen. A job done a lot quicker than I could ever have done myself. I was so glad to see the kitchen gone.

Something we want to do is take the stairs out, replace with new, but have them turned the other way round. So we spoke to the builder and a stair man to see if this would be possible. Turns out it is tricky because there is a steal beam that runs across the living room and would be in the way of where the stairs would need to go. In the meantime, I decided to make a start and bash down the wall to see what was holding up the steel beam. Unbelievable it was a scaffolding type pole, hidden in the plasterboard wall. We will need to get this replaced for sure.

I didn’t get very far with this wall as the wood was solid and I wasn’t sure how to take it down.

I also started to take the wood panelling off the stairs but stopped halfway as I realised the banister would come off too. I thought it safer to leave it there for now.

The mess I’ve made so far

As you can see, we have now trashed this house, it is turning into a lot more work than we anticipated.

I am struggling to find the time to get anything done and my skills are very limited. I think it is time to bring in some experts. More on that next week 😁 …
